Moderating one question across the class

Read every student's answer to one question, sort by marks, and adjust marks or feedback.

Written by Kat Morgan

Is the marking fair? Did half the class fall for the same wrong idea? The quickest way to find out is to read one question across everybody, and the One question view puts every student's answer to that question on one page, each with its mark beside it.

Opening it

Open the classroom, go to Assignments, click the assignment and then the lesson. Go to the Blocks tab. Each row is a question, with its type, the average mark and how many students submitted it. Click the question you want.

The full-screen review opens on that question, with One question selected in the sidebar on the left. It works the same way for New editor and Legacy editor lessons, and for lessons inside a pathway.

Already on the review screen, reading one student's work? Click One question in the sidebar to switch.

Finding your way

Under One question there is a question picker. Open it and type in Search questions... to find a question by name. Next question moves you on, and the arrow beside it takes you back.

Below that, the Summary shows how many students have completed the question (for example "8 of 8 completed") and a chart of how the class did:

  • Long Answer and Legacy free response questions: Marks Distribution, with the Lowest Mark, Highest Mark and Average Mark underneath.

  • Multiple Choice: Response Distribution, so you can see which wrong option was popular.

  • Select All Correct: Selection Distribution.

  • Match: Pair Correctness.

  • Resequence: Common Orderings.

A few Legacy editor question types have no chart, but their answers still show in full.

Sorting and searching

Above the answers, Search students filters the cards by a student's name or email address.

The sort menu next to it starts on Name (alphabetical by surname). The other options are:

  • Highest marks: the strongest answers first. Handy when you want an exemplar to show the class.

  • Lowest marks: the students who need a word first.

  • Latest submitted: the most recent answers first, so late arrivals are easy to catch.

Sorting is only on the One question view. When you are reading one student's whole submission you get a student search instead.

Reading each answer

Each card shows the student's name, when they last answered and their mark. Click a card and the marking panel on the right switches to that student.

On a New editor long answer, green ticks sit at the end of each phrase in the student's answer that earned a mark, one tick per mark. Click a tick and its row in the Marking breakdown lights up, and clicking a row finds its tick. Each row gives the criterion, the marks it got, the phrase the marker quoted and the reason.

The Mark scheme tab next to the breakdown shows the scheme the answer was marked against. Below both, Feedback for the student shows the mark and the feedback the student gets.

Legacy editor free responses show the answer and the marking, without the ticks. For choice questions such as Multiple Choice or Match, the panel shows the score. For more on how criteria, quotes and ticks work, see How long answers are marked: criteria, quotes and ticks.

Changing a mark or the feedback

Disagree with the marker? Click Adjust mark or Edit feedback. Both open the same Edit Feedback and Mark form: use the minus and plus buttons to change the mark, rewrite the feedback if you want to, and click Save.

You can change marks and feedback on Long Answer questions and Legacy editor free responses. The scores on choice questions can't be changed here.

When students see your change depends on the lesson's feedback setting. If results go out on return, they see it once you return their work from the Students tab. See Moderate and Return Results.

If the automatic marking got something badly wrong, click Report Incorrect Marking at the bottom of the panel to tell us. See Report Incorrect Marking.

Fixing the mark scheme for everyone

If the same criterion trips up the whole class, the mark scheme is probably the problem rather than the students. On the Mark scheme tab, click Edit mark scheme, preview how the change would mark the student in front of you, then save and remark the class. See How to Update Mark Schemes and Remark Submissions for the details.

Getting back

Click the lesson's name in the breadcrumb at the top of the page. That takes you back to the lesson, where Return submissions, Enable resubmission, Mark as completed and CSV live on the Students tab.
