Reviewing a student's submission

Written by Kat Morgan

Everything one student handed in, the marks it earned and the reasons behind them, on one full page. This is where you check the marking, change what you disagree with, and move on to the next student.

Open a submission

Open the classroom from the sidebar, go to Assignments, click the assignment and then the lesson. On the Students tab:

  • Click a student's name to open their whole submission.

  • Or click one of their scores in the question columns, such as 2 / 4, to open the submission at that question. Scores are clickable once the student has completed an answer to a marked question.

It works the same for lessons built in the New editor and the Legacy editor, whether the lesson stands alone or sits in a pathway.

Move between students

One student is selected at the top left. The box under it shows whose work you are reading. Open it and type in Search students... to jump to anyone in the class, or click Next student to work down the list. The arrow beside it goes back one.

The student picker open under One student, with Search students and the class list

Under that, Questions lists every question in the lesson with this student's score. Click one, or click its card in the middle, to bring up its marking.

Would you rather see every student's answer to one question side by side? Click One question. See Moderating one question across the class.

Reading an answer

Each question gets a card with its type, the marks available, when it was submitted and the mark it earned.

On a long answer in a New editor lesson, a green tick sits at the end of each phrase that earned a mark. Click a tick and its row lights up in the breakdown on the right. It works the other way round too.

Photos of handwritten work get their ticks on the photo itself. Under the photo, File transcription shows the text Mindjoy read from it. Click it to open it. That transcript is what the marking read, so it is the first place to look if a mark seems off.

PDFs open right in the answer, page by page, with arrows to change page and a download button. The ticks land on the page where the mark was earned.

Legacy editor lessons open on the same page, with the student's answers and any files they attached. They do not get ticks or a File transcription, and a PDF shows as a file to download.

The marking panel

The right-hand side shows the marking for the question you have selected.

  • Marking breakdown lists every criterion in the mark scheme: a tick or a cross, the marks, the student's words that earned it, and the reason.

  • Mark scheme shows the scheme the answer was marked against.

  • Feedback for the student is what the student will read, with their mark.

  • Report Incorrect Marking sits at the bottom, for when the marking itself has gone wrong.

For more on criteria and quotes, see How long answers are marked.

Multiple choice and the other choice-style questions are marked automatically, so they show the score and nothing to change.

Change a mark or the feedback

On a long answer (New editor) or a free response (Legacy editor), click Adjust mark or Edit feedback. Both open the same Edit Feedback and Mark form.

Use the minus and plus buttons to set the mark, rewrite the feedback if you want to, and click Save.

Edit Feedback and Mark open under the breakdown, with the mark stepper, the feedback and Save

Marks on choice-style questions cannot be changed here.

When students see your change depends on the lesson's feedback type. With On return, they see it when you return the lesson. With Instant or On submission, they see it the next time they open the lesson.

When the marking looks wrong

If the same mistake shows up student after student, the mark scheme is usually the problem. Fix it once and remark the class: see How to update mark schemes and remark submissions. If the scheme is fine and the marking still is not, report it to us.

When you are done

Click the lesson name in the breadcrumb at the top of the page to go back to the Students tab. Returning work, Enable resubmission, Mark as completed and CSV all live there.
