Using the Tutor Chat

Chatting to your Tutor offers text, transcription, images, and a math keyboard for comprehensive learning support.

Written by Kat Morgan

Tutor chat lets you have a conversation with an AI tutor assigned to your classroom. You can ask questions, upload files, listen to responses, and give feedback - all within the chat interface.

Starting a conversation

1. Find your tutor assignment in your classroom or on the home page

2. Click Start Chat or New chat to begin a conversation

3. Type your question in the text box at the bottom and press Enter or click the send button

The tutor responds in real time. You can continue the conversation naturally by sending follow-up messages.

Chat threads

Your conversations are organized into threads. Each thread is an independent conversation, so you can have separate discussions about different topics with the same tutor.

On desktop, the left sidebar shows your chat history. Click any previous thread to return to that conversation, or click New chat to start a fresh one.

Voice features

Dictation - Click the microphone icon in the composer to dictate your message. When you stop, the transcribed text appears in the text box ready to send.

Listen - Click the speaker icon under any tutor response to hear it read aloud. Click again to stop playback.

Formatting and maths

Click the Aa button to open the formatting toolbar. This gives you access to bold, italic, lists, code blocks, and more.

For maths, click the maths keyboard button (xn icon) to enter equations and formulas. You can write inline maths or display-mode expressions.

Uploading files

Click the paperclip icon to upload files, or drag and drop them into the chat area. You can share images, documents, CSV files, and code files. The tutor can read and respond to the content of uploaded files.

See Uploading Files in Tutor Chat for the full list of supported file types.

Drawing

Click the pencil icon to open the drawing canvas. You can sketch diagrams, work through problems visually, or illustrate concepts, then send the drawing as an image for the tutor to analyse.

Message actions

Each tutor response has action buttons underneath it:

  • Copy - Copy the response text to your clipboard

  • Thumbs up / Thumbs down - Give feedback on the response to help improve the tutor

  • Listen - Hear the response read aloud

Suggested follow-ups

After the tutor responds, you may see suggested follow-up prompts below the message. Click any suggestion to send it as your next message - this is a quick way to continue exploring the topic without typing.

Tips

  • Press Shift + Enter to start a new line without sending your message

  • The tutor can read text in uploaded images, so screenshots of textbook pages or handwritten notes work well

  • You can upload multiple files at once by selecting them together or dragging them in as a group
