Connecting your LMS with a setup link

Register Mindjoy in Canvas, Moodle or Brightspace from a link, without typing in URLs and keys

Written by Kat Morgan

A setup link connects your LMS to Mindjoy without the copy-paste marathon. You paste one link into your LMS, the LMS and Mindjoy swap the keys and IDs they need, and your LMS asks you to approve Mindjoy. You need to be an organisation admin.

Which LMSs it works with

  • Moodle: the link does the whole job. Approve the tool in Moodle and you're connected.

  • Canvas and Brightspace: the link registers Mindjoy. These LMSs create the deployment once you install Mindjoy, so you copy its deployment ID back into Mindjoy afterwards.

  • Blackboard Learn: doesn't support setup links. Use Set up manually instead.

  • Any other LMS that supports LTI 1.3 Dynamic Registration should work too. If yours doesn't, use Set up manually.

Each Mindjoy organisation connects to one LMS.

Create and paste a setup link

1. In Mindjoy, click your organisation name at the bottom of the sidebar and choose Organization. Open the Integrations tab and click LTI. You need to be an organisation admin.

2. Click Create setup link and copy the link

3. Paste it into your LMS. Not sure where? Click setup link in the sentence above the button for the About setup links guide, which shows where each LMS keeps it:

The About setup links dialog listing where to paste the link in Moodle, Canvas and Brightspace

  • Moodle: Site administration > Plugins > Activity modules > External tool > Manage tools, in the Tool URL box

  • Canvas: Admin > Developer Keys > + Developer Key > LTI Registration

  • Brightspace: Admin Tools > Manage Extensibility > LTI Advantage > Register Tool, then choose Dynamic

4. Approve Mindjoy in your LMS. The LMS window says Mindjoy is connected and you can close it.

5. Keep Mindjoy open while you do this. The page notices when your LMS finishes and switches to your LMS connection card by itself.

Each link works for 15 minutes. If it runs out, Mindjoy says That setup link expired. Create a new one. Once you have a link, the refresh icon next to it (Make a new link) swaps it for a fresh one.

Your LMS connection card

Once connected, LTI shows a card named after your LMS, with its Issuer, Client ID and Deployment ID. The line under the name tells you where things stand:

  • Connected with LTI 1.3: all set. Teachers and students can open Mindjoy from your LMS.

  • Add the deployment ID from your LMS to finish connecting. Launches won't work yet. Copy the deployment ID from your LMS (Canvas and Brightspace) and add it with Edit details.

  • Turned off. Launches from this LMS are refused. The Enabled switch is off. Switch it back on when you're ready.

The card also has:

  • Enabled: pause launches from your LMS without losing the connection

  • Edit details: change the Issuer, Client ID, Deployment ID or your LMS's URLs

  • Disconnect: remove the connection, for example to connect a different LMS

  • Mindjoy’s tool values: the URLs your LMS needs, only if you set it up by hand

If your LMS can't connect

When something goes wrong, the LMS window says Mindjoy couldn't be connected with the reason. The ones you're most likely to see:

What to do

This setup link is invalid or has expired. Make a new one in Mindjoy.

Create a new link and paste that one.

This organization already has an LMS connected. Disconnect it in Mindjoy first.

Mindjoy connects to one LMS per organisation. Disconnect the old one, then try again.

This LMS is already connected to another Mindjoy organization.

Your LMS is linked to a different Mindjoy organisation. Contact us if that's unexpected.

Your LMS rejected the registration.

Check you pasted the link in the right place in your LMS and have admin rights there, then try again with a new link.

Your LMS’s LTI configuration isn’t one Mindjoy can use.

Use Set up manually instead.

If the message also says Your LMS now lists a Mindjoy tool that won’t work., your LMS created the tool before the connection failed. Delete that tool in your LMS before you try again, or you'll end up with two.

Set up manually

Click Set up manually under the Create setup link button. The Manual setup dialog has two columns: copy Mindjoy's values into your LMS on the left, then paste your LMS's values on the right and click Connect. The Deployment ID is required, so finish the LMS side first.
