Turn on File creation and a tutor can write documents your students keep: revision notes, a study guide, a practice set, a table of data. Students open them beside the chat or download them as a PDF, so the good stuff stops getting lost halfway up a long conversation.
Turning it on
1. Open the tutor from My Library and click Tutor settings.
2. Open Advanced settings and turn on File creation. It is marked Experimental feature and is off on every tutor until you switch it on.
3. Click Save changes, go back to the tutor and click New chat. A conversation that is already running keeps the old behaviour, so test it in a fresh one.
You can also switch it on while you build a tutor. It sits on the With Agent step, and under Advanced settings if you start From scratch.
What students see
A student asks for something to keep, such as "Can you make me a one-page revision sheet on forces?", and the tutor replies with a document card rather than pasting the whole thing into the chat. The card shows the document's title and gives them:
Open document (the icon in the corner of the card), which shows the document in a panel beside the chat.
Download as PDF, for notes, guides and other written documents.
A download in the original format, such as Download as MD, Download as HTML or Download as CSV.
Students can ask for changes ("add a section on friction") and the tutor edits the document and offers the new version. When you read a student's chat history, their documents are there too, and you can download them.
What the tutor will and won't write
It writes study aids: study guides, revision notes, summary sheets, worked examples, practice sets and data tables.
Short questions still get a short answer in the chat. It makes a document when the student asks for one, and offers first when a long answer would read better as a file.
It will not write work a student hands in as their own, such as an essay, a report or answers to their homework. It offers an outline, a planning template or feedback on their own draft instead. It can tidy up or convert text the student wrote, keeping their words.
Your Socratic mode applies to documents as well. If the tutor would not give an answer away in the chat, it will not put it in a document either.
Where it works
Tutor chats in the web app, including tutors inside lessons. In a lesson the card offers the downloads but not Open document.
Not in the Mindjoy phone app, in voice conversations, or on a public tutor's try page.
When someone copies your tutor, File creation starts off in their copy until they turn it on.
