When Mindjoy is registered as an LTI tool provider in Blackboard Learn, its placements can show up for every instructor on the system. They appear in the Content Market in courses that are not part of your rollout, and students see a tool nobody has told them about.
If you are running a pilot, or phasing Mindjoy in one department at a time, you can keep Mindjoy hidden everywhere except the courses that are actually using it. This guide shows how.
Before you start
Blackboard Learn administrator access
Mindjoy already connected to Blackboard Learn (see Connecting Blackboard Learn with LTI 1.3)
A list of every course that should have Mindjoy, including any course that already has Mindjoy content in it
The Deployment ID currently registered in Mindjoy, under Organization > Integrations
Use one deployment, then restrict it
Your Mindjoy organization holds one LTI registration, made up of one issuer, one client ID and one deployment ID. Mindjoy matches every incoming launch against those three values.
Creating a second Blackboard deployment for a different set of courses will not work, because only one deployment ID can be registered in Mindjoy. Launches from the other deployment will be rejected.
So keep the one deployment you already have, attach every participating course to it, and switch the placements off everywhere else.
What controls where Mindjoy appears
Which institutional hierarchy nodes the Mindjoy deployment is attached to
Whether the Mindjoy placements are switched on for those nodes and courses
You need both. A course only gets Mindjoy if it is covered by the deployment and the placements are available to it.
Step 1: Attach the deployment to the right nodes
1. Go to Admin > Integrations > LTI Tool Providers
2. Select the arrow next to Mindjoy and choose Manage Deployments
3. Open the deployment whose Deployment ID is the one registered in Mindjoy
4. Attach only the institutional hierarchy nodes that should have Mindjoy, and remove any node that covers courses which should not
5. Click Submit
A node that is already assigned to one deployment cannot be assigned to another deployment of the same tool provider. Since Mindjoy works from a single deployment, keep all participating nodes on that one.
Step 2: Put the participating courses under that node
1. Go to Admin > Communities > Institutional Hierarchy
2. Select the node you attached to the deployment
3. Open the Courses tab and associate the courses that are using Mindjoy
Courses that are not associated with that node, and do not sit below it, are not covered by the deployment.
Step 3: Control availability per node
1. Still in Institutional Hierarchy, select the node
2. Open the Tools tab and search for Mindjoy
3. Set Availability to On for the nodes that should have Mindjoy, and Off for the nodes that should not
4. Choose whether the change applies to new courses only, or to new and existing courses. Pick new and existing if the pilot courses already exist.
5. Click Submit
Setting the system-wide default
To keep Mindjoy off by default across the whole system, and let it be turned on only where you want it:
1. Go to Admin > Tools and Utilities > Tools
2. Search for Mindjoy
3. Clear the Availability Default checkbox so Mindjoy is off in courses by default, or set Availability to Off to switch it off outright
4. Leave the setting unlocked if you want instructors in participating courses to turn Mindjoy on themselves. Lock it to stop instructors changing it at course level.
5. Click Submit
Switching a placement off completely
Each Mindjoy placement has its own availability. Go to Admin > Integrations > LTI Tool Providers, select the arrow next to Mindjoy and choose Manage Placements. Setting a placement's Availability to No removes it everywhere, in every course.
Use this to retire a placement type you do not want at all, not to scope a pilot.
Watch out for courses that already use Mindjoy
Removing a course from the node, or switching the placements off in it, applies to Mindjoy content that is already in that course. Those items stop launching. Check your full list of courses using Mindjoy before you remove anything.
Check it worked
1. In a participating course, add content and open Content Market. Mindjoy's placements should be listed.
2. In a course outside the node, open Content Market and confirm Mindjoy is not listed.
3. Launch a Mindjoy item from the participating course to confirm it still opens.
Troubleshooting
Mindjoy is not in Content Market in a participating course
Check three things: the course is associated with the node attached to the deployment, that deployment is the one registered in Mindjoy, and the Mindjoy placements are available for that node.
Mindjoy appears in a course that should not have it
The course is probably inheriting from a parent node. Set availability to Off on that node, or move the course to a node that does not have Mindjoy.
Launches return an error after you changed deployments
The Deployment ID in Mindjoy has to match the deployment you are using. Copy it from Manage Deployments and update it in Mindjoy under Organization > Integrations.
The labels do not match what I see
Wording varies between Blackboard Learn versions and between Original and Ultra Course View. The structure is the same: a deployment attached to hierarchy nodes, and tool availability set per node.
