When you assign a lesson built in the new experience to a classroom, you can give it an open date, a due date, or both. Students see a clear status pill on the lesson and a countdown when they're approaching a due date.
Opening the Assign dialog
From the lesson, click the ... menu at the top right and pick Assign. The dialog opens with a list of your classrooms.
Picking a classroom
Tick a classroom to assign the lesson. A calendar icon appears next to the selected classroom. Click the icon to expand the date controls.
Setting Start and End dates
Once expanded, you'll see four fields:
Start Date: the date students can start the lesson
Start time: the exact time on that date
End Date: the date submissions are due
End time: the exact time on that date
Leave a date blank to make the lesson available immediately or to leave it open-ended. Click Save when you're done.
What students see
Students see a status pill on the lesson:
Upcoming before the start date
Open between start and end
Due in 2 days as the end date approaches
Closed after the end date if late submissions are off
If the lesson is set as "submittable", students can only submit once they've completed every required interactive block. They'll see what's left to complete before the submit button becomes active.
Why this is helpful
Before, scheduling a lesson meant relying on student honesty or an external calendar reminder. Now the lesson itself knows when it should open and close.
For homework, that means you set the assignment once and it appears in the student's queue at the right time. For an in-class lesson, you can open it at the start of the period and close it when the bell rings.
Pathway-level vs lesson-level dates
If your lesson is part of a pathway, the pathway might already have its own due date. The lesson-level date is independent. You can set both, or just one. Lesson-level dates win when they're more restrictive (so a lesson due on Tuesday inside a pathway due on Friday still closes on Tuesday).
For pathway-wide dates, see "Setting a Start and Due date for a Pathway".
Extending an end date
Reopen the Assign dialog and change the End Date. Students who haven't submitted get the extension automatically. Students who already submitted on time keep their original submission timestamp.
