Tutor Image Generation

Enable tutors to generate images inline during chat to help illustrate concepts visually

Tutors can generate images inline during a chat conversation to help illustrate concepts visually. When a student asks a tutor to draw, illustrate, or visualise something, the tutor creates an image and displays it directly in the chat thread.

Enabling image generation

Image generation is controlled per tutor. To enable it:

1. Open the tutor you want to configure and go to Settings.

2. Scroll down to the Image generation toggle at the bottom of the settings form.

The tutor settings page showing the Image generation toggle

3. Turn on Image generation and click Save.

Once enabled, the tutor will generate images when students ask it to illustrate, draw, show, or visualise concepts.

How students use it

Students simply ask the tutor to create a visual in their normal chat conversation. For example:

  • "Can you draw a diagram of a plant cell?"

  • "Show me what the solar system looks like"

  • "Illustrate how a lever works"

  • "Visualise the water cycle"

The tutor responds with both a text explanation and a generated image. While the image is being created, a loading animation appears in the chat. Once ready, the image displays inline.

Interacting with generated images

Students can interact with generated images in several ways:

  • Click to expand - Click on any generated image to open it in a full-size modal view

  • Download - Hover over the image to reveal a download button

  • Gallery - A thumbnail strip at the bottom of the chat shows all images generated in the session, making it easy to scroll back through them

Generated images persist across page refreshes, so students can return to a conversation and still see all previously generated images.

When the tutor generates images

The tutor uses its judgement about when an image would be helpful. It is more likely to generate images when:

  • The student explicitly asks for a visual ("draw me...", "show me...")

  • The topic benefits from visual illustration (anatomy, geography, physics diagrams, historical scenes)

  • The student is struggling to understand a concept that could be clarified visually

The tutor generates one image per response to keep the conversation focused.

Notes for educators

  • Image generation counts towards the organisation's usage. Each image generation uses one API call.

  • Generated images are subject to content moderation. Inappropriate image requests are blocked.

  • The feature can be enabled or disabled per tutor, so you can allow it for some tutors (e.g., a Science tutor) and leave it off for others (e.g., a Writing tutor where images are less useful).
