Mindjoy tutors have four levels of socratic questioning, to support all kinds of different use cases from revision tutors that need to answer questions but keep students thinking, to tutors that push back on everything in classic Socratic mode. Let's take a look at each option and what they mean.
1. Select the tutor you'd like to adjust the socratic mode for.
2. Click "Settings"
3. Off means that the tutors will not use socratic questioning regularly, and will behave more like a classic AI assistant: directly answering questions, doing calculations without making a fuss, etc.
4. Guided means that the tutor will answer questions (partially) but will always follow up with a socratic question to complete the thought or extend the learning. It will not do calculations for the students.
This mode is ideal for revision, or subjects where you'd like to enable the students to gain answers quickly but still require them to think a little about the response.
5. Adaptive is the mode we recommend to most use cases, it will always start off with Socratic questioning but if students show lower levels of knowledge about the subject it will dynamically start to help with knowledge transfer and understanding. It will not answer questions or calculations for the students, only ever guide and support them in answering them themselves.
Recommended for any subject where students are at different levels of understanding on a topic, or the topic is new or unfamiliar to the students.
6. Socratic is our classic mode where every question and response is pushed back against in a Socratic way, this is ideal for students who have some existing knowledge and would be able to get to the solution with a little thinking and support. Socratic will never answer a student's question directly, and will never do a calculation for them, only help them get to the solution through applying their own thinking.
We do not recommend using this option for tutors designed to support exam preparation or revision.
